SUSTAINABLE MANIFESTO

Matemica believes that sustainability must be sought at every scale.

A human-scale activity such as Matemica can - and must - do this through simple, concrete and measurable actions.

The choices described here are in constant updating and are shared solely out of a willingness and pleasure to do so.

Spaces and energy

The headquarters is housed in a historic artisan building from the 1960s, which was renovated in the 1990s.

No new land was consumed for its construction.

In 2025, prior to the opening of the new premises, the spaces were upgraded in terms of energy, reaching the class A4.

The location was chosen on the basis of the distance from the owner's home (less than 1 km), so that it could be reached walking or cycling throughout the year.

The main source of electricity will be self-generated photovoltaic energy (plant under construction).

Production activities are planned favouring peak sunshine hours.

Working hours are seasonally adapted to the natural light available and radiation.

Heating and hot water production are entrusted to heat pump systems.

No fossil fuel (gas or diesel) is used.

Room temperatures, in which mainly active work takes place, are maintained at the minimum necessary levels.

Mobility and logistics

Travel to customers and suppliers is kept to a minimum, favouring the use of IT tools.

Suppliers' deliveries to headquarters are scheduled so that each supplier delivers only one day a week.

Mathematics uses a plug-in hybrid vehicle for the transport of materials and finished products, using mainly electricity from renewable sources.

Internal material handling takes place through electric pallet truck.

Materials and Process

The design is oriented towards a minimal use of materials, reducing waste and non-strictly functional components.

The use of solid wood flooring favours woods with rapid growth, particularly conifers compared to broad-leaved trees.

Wood shavings are reused in composting.

The procurement of materials is done by seeking, where possible, the local supply chain, tracing the entire supply chain as far as possible.

All finishes, stains and varnishes - both on wood and metal - are exclusively water-based.

Waste

Waste disposal takes place through a careful separation of:

paper, plastic, glass, metal, wood, oils and paints, batteries, electronics and other specific fractions.

Many of these practices are easily adopted and, to some extent, already standardised in the residential sector.

Not so in today's industrial and craft scenario.
